On the first Saturday of September, Minnie stood back after shepherding eighty-five guests gathered at Terrapin Point to their seats to witness the wedding of Ellen Hampton and Charles Shipman. Falling for You had organized weddings of acquaintances and even some distant relatives, but at this wedding, Minnie almost felt as if she was a member of the family. This wedding was at sunset and an outdoor reception in a large tent awaited the guests, who’d been told to wear comfortable shoes and make donations to the local animal shelter or the park instead of bringing gifts.

It was exactly the kind of wedding Minnie would want for herself. Outdoors, memorable, but still casual and feeling as if it was part of a time and place bigger than itself. The falls always made her feel like she was just a moment in time compared with all the water that had gone over them. As she glanced over at Grant in his suit, she was very glad he happened to be in the same moment of time as she was.

“The orchestra just gave us the signal,” she said to the small group waiting with her at the opposite end of a long aisle marked by rows of white chairs on both sides. The groom, best man, and wedding officiant stood under the archway, and Minnie waited with the bride and her small wedding party, which included Grant, his sister, Kit, and his niece as a flower girl.

“Just walk slowly and don’t get distracted by any rainbows that pop up over the falls,” Minnie said to the flower girl as she leaned down and straightened the bow on her bouquet.

“I won’t,” the girl said seriously before beginning her march.

“I can’t promise the same,” Grant said, leaning close to Minnie and giving her a quick kiss on the cheek.

“You have an important mission,” she said. “Your mother needs you to stay focused and get her down the aisle to her wonderful groom.”

“Save me a dance at the reception?”

“As many as I can,” Minnie promised. She brushed lint off his shoulder, told the bride she was beautiful and then gestured for them to follow Kit down the aisle. All the guests stood when the bride began her walk and Minnie noticed a few open mouths and big eyes. Yes, the wedding gown was red—the one in the picture she’d shown Minnie. A beautiful, fun red with sheer sleeves and a multilayered red skirt that reminded Minnie of a rose unfurling.

It was a perfect gown for an outdoor wedding under the wide sky. A rainbow appeared over the falls—a common sight, but a good sign, nonetheless. Minnie hoped Grant and his mom saw it, too. Minnie circled the chairs and took one she had reserved for herself on the outside of a row near the front.
